How Do You Soothe a Sore Throat?

Aspirin

Aspirin will work wonders for a sore throat. Take as directed, but remember not to give to children under the age of 18 because it may cause Reye’s syndrome.

Popsicles

Nice cool popsicles are a great relief for a sore throat. Just let little pieces melt down your throat instead of sucking on it.

Gargle

Gargling relieves throat pain by reducing inflamation and phlegm. Try gargling with one of these:

  • raspberry tea
  • sage tea
  • warm saltwater
  • Listerine

Raspberry tea can also act as a fever reducer, just don’t drink same tea you gargled with.

Vinegar

Apple-cider vinegar combined with honey and warm water makes a great drink for soothing a sore throat. All you need is:

  • 8 ounces of warm water
  • a tablespoon of honey
  • a tablespoon of apple-cider vinegar

Sip slowy while warm.

Horseradish

It might sound strange, but a cocktail of horseradish, honey and cloves guarantees to soothe a sore throat. Combine a tablespoon of horseradish and a teaspoon each of honey and ground cloves with 8 ounces of warm water. It’ll be gross, but no one ever said medicine tasted good.

Hot Liquids

Drinking warm liquids, like tea or coffee, soothes a sore throat. It’s equivalent to a heating pad on a sore muscle. Just don’t drink liquid that is too hot because it may cause scalding.

Garlic

Garlic, an old Amish remedy for a sore throat, contains allicin, which can kill strep bacteria. All you need to do is peel a clove of garlic, stick a piece in each cheek and let it work it’s magic.

Postnasal Drip

One of the leading causes of a sore throat is postnasal drip. Congested sinuses cause the drip, which irritates the throat. Using an over-the-counter medicine containing pseudoephedrine can help alleviate this type of sore throat pain.

Chloroseptic

Chloroseptic is an analgesic spray. It offers temporary relief of sore throat pain. It is safe to use as needed.

Lozenges

Lozenges will ease a sore throat by coating it. Even a plain hard candy can have the same effect. Simply allow the candy to dissolve and flow down your throat without too much sucking.
